Benimaquia
We found a historical site from the Orientalizing and Early Iberian periods, that is, the 7th century BC.
What remains of the wall today measures 145 meters. It is L-shaped on one side, thanks to its privileged location on the other side, providing a natural defense.
Although it is clear that it had six towers, recent aerial photographs fuel the suspicion that there may have been a seventh. However, this does not indicate that it was a super fortress, but rather an example of prestige architecture. I say this because the proximity between them makes it impossible to effectively defend the wall that separates them. So, it is most likely that it was a project promoted by the current leader, imitating others, to say: Koiati πόσο όμορφος είμαι. ("Look how handsome I am")
I confess I have no idea of Greek, and they spoke their own language, which wasn't that one. But I want to point out that at the time we're in, the Romans hadn't yet set foot on our lands, but rather the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians. At that time, the center of our peninsula belonged to the Celts; toward Portugal, there was territory that belonged to the Indo-Europeans: in the south, near Andalusia, the Turdetani; in the north, the Aquitanians; and here on our coast, the Iberians. Their language is very difficult to find.
The collection of ceramics, among others, found in the excavations, gives us an idea of the date of this site. Phoenician amphorae from factories in Andalusia, and Iberian imitations of this model. Hand-shaped vessels, among others, can be seen in the Gata de Gorgos museum. Other remains found, such as bronze buckles (buttons did not yet exist), confirm the change from the Bronze Age to the following one.
How to get there;
There are two ways. Here's one, as the other appears on one of the routes to climb Montgó from Jesus Pobre.
On your GPS, search for Medusa Street 39, Denia.
Next to the chalet, the marked path begins. It continues behind some houses, and when you reach the fork, take the right. You'll gradually approach the village.
The views from up there are very beautiful.
